First things first and thats to say congratulations to Alfie on becoming independently motor mobile which around here where transport is scarce and distances large, is a very big thing to a young person I would imagine. My advice Alfie….get out there and fill ya boots son.
Well much has happened since the blog blogged off and as much as I would love to detail minutely each and every event I’m afraid you will have to do with a summary. I cant quite remember where we left off but our five chicks hatched two days after Champions League final night and have now unfortunately been reduced to three. I had to neck one as it was blind and getting pretty rough justice from the others. This was a most unpleasant experience but if we are going to rear our own fowl for meat then it was a hurdle I had to get over. Tess, the collie dog aged 7 months saw off the other one clearly mistaking it for one of her many ragged toys. Actually there’s no point trying to make excuses for her , it was cold blooded murder for which she was duely reprimanded. All of my (limited) dog training skills gleened from the dog whisperer on satelite TV just transformed into a raging, flailing torrent of wrath directed at said mut. I think she got the message but I still wouldn’t trust her with the chicks.
Having built the horses a passable stable I have now finished the chickens new chateau. Complete with drawbridge access and a west wing for egg prodution our flock seem very happy with their luxury abode. Virtually nothing has changed or improved in the house of course and we face another winter without double glazing or even a door that doesn’t have huge holes in it at least we can be happy that our animals are safe and sound…….does anyone know a decent Project Manager?
In fairness we have progressed a bit. We have a dishwasher now plumbed directly into the septic tank which allows noxious gases straight back into the house, not at all pleasant in the mornings. I think I will have to get a bigger U bend or something. Foul oudours not withstanding we are mightily pleased to be able to pile stuff into the machine each night rather than tackle the mounds of washing up I make in our tiny little sink with no work area around it….and a floor that is caving in as it is so rotten..wheres that Project Manager??
The garden is in full flow with the promise of tomatos a plenty, courgette and beans doing well and beets and brocoli blooming although a rather disappointing show from the chillies but there is still time. The chickens have ravaged the pumpkin patch today so they ought to be careful lest I have to make chicken soup instead of pumpkin.
